Foods that Fuel the Mind???

December 19th 2007 22:46
As I was busily writing and adding my comments on the various blogs I subscribe to, and pondering what to write about for my next post. Nothing came to mind, I drew a blank, not a smidgen of an idea struck me as being blog worthy for that next post. What to do? Ah, the typical guys response, I'll have a drink and a snack. That usually spurs guys into action; post snack that is, after the requisite nap and after hiding the assorted dirty dishes (so that the missus will do them later). Leaving us in a warm, fuzzy muse mode and when reinvigorated from that nap, our blog mode switches into high gear; again, after we've actually returned from the land of nod.

While in that hazy twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness, lost in thoughtful meditation, pondering the mysteries of life, I find myself wondering; How can a sandwich (or three) generate so darn many dirty dishes? For crying out loud, they were only the usual 8in sausage, refried beans, shredded cheese, minced olives-garlic-pimento in olive oil, sliced onion and mayo on bread, hot sandwiches. That (ok, fine; those) and a large mug of freshly brewed coffee with real cream and eaten in my manspace, free from the burden of close scrutiny by my resident dietitian and life coach, Tisha.

It got me to thinking about my other favorite snack sandwiches:

a. Cold, sauerkraut with sweet and sour sauce, unencumbered hot dogs on a bun with mayo, served with Cherry Pepsi, or

b. Peanut butter, banana and sweet pickle sandwich on sour dough bread with mayo, served with hot choclate, or

c. Fried potato, sliced onion, sliced tomato, lettuce, refried bean and garlic on whole wheat bread with mayo, occasionally with sliced hard boiled egg and pickle slices, served with butter milk, or

d. Dry tuna (1.88 kg can), chopped olives, raw garlic, sweet pickle relish, chopped onion slices, minced egg, chopped apple, red pepper, walnut pieces, chopped celery, large scoop of cream cheese, parsley flakes, mayo and real milk all mixed to a fairly dry consistency (so that it can be piled high) on white bread with butter and mayo to taste, and finally, garnished with lettuce and a generous pile of potato chips then smushed down enough to get your mouth around it, served with hot coffee, or

e. Canned corned beef, fried potato slices and cottage cheese on wheat bread and mustard; served with a root beer and vanilla ice cream float.

Well, enough of that for now; so, what's your favorite snack sandwich? We can do deserts later. Good grief, I'm going in for another hot dog, I wonder if I have any hot fudge left???

Photos shows gummie bear and tuna fixings on a sesame seed bun, served with Dr. Pepper; a power bloggers snack. Body by JR.

ha, great subject. I love sandwiches, too.

My favourite:

two slice of rye.
1/4 pound of Montreal smoked meat
A little bit of very good mustard.

The bread is there just to hold onto!

Amen Cibbuano, you're preaching to the choir here. I love sandwiches and just tolerate the bread stuff surrounding the goodies inside. Raven

Wow, I'm on Tisha's side, you can't have been reading my posts, Raven, shame on you, are you sure you're getting enough to eat?

Hello Raven

Your choice of sandwiches have made me realise how much of a lazy cook/sandwich maker I am. There's a whole world out there, why am I not doing more?!

I am inspired...thank-you,

Tracy

katyzzz, she (Tisha) has suggested I attend the self help group, Sandwich Junkies Anonymous, and to arrange for another physical exam, to see if it's going to be surgically possible to extract the wok or boot she plans to forcibly insert up my nethers should I elect to keep up the raging creative sandwich snacking; my pleas for mercy are falling upon deaf ears. She's tough.

Tracy,Tracy Tracy, for goodness sake don't let katyzzz or my Tisha hear that, they'll have you in a recovery group so fast that your shadow will be two hours late catching up with you as well.

I am enamored with that period of history and my banner captures the spirit of the era for me, thanks for the compliment.

Everyone,
I love sandwiches. They're one of the major dietary mainstays of bachelor living, and mebbe I have gone a bit over board with them. But hey, I'm an open, happy, sandwich loving sort of guy and I'm not wanting to become unhappily esconced in some closet when I have my safe space; the notorious manspace, a sandwich eating, beverage swilling and sports watching sanctuary so coveted by domesticated males everywhere.

Tisha and I are still negotiating about this issue. As it stands right now; I don't bring up her magic closet
that produces so many new old clothes and shoes and I get a pass on my manspace snacking activities- unless my blood sugar goes up, I gain weight, need to move up a pant size or happen to irritate her. hahaha, I love being alive and married to this woman.
