Alaska with all of it's wondrous beauty, rancorous citizens and quirky politics is unique in the world. If you love rugged outdoor activities, you've just discovered nirvana.

The time for protesting the Olympics being held in China has long since past.

As an Alaskan, I don't see things the way supporters of trendy causes do outside of our state; the rule of action and reaction have not changed or been set aside. Thoughtless action could ultimately provoke the killing of innocents, and who will then claim responsibility?

Should the protester have their way and do manage to embarrass China, there will be a backlash against Tibetans, and any dissident captured; they will be brutalized.

These same folks who rail against the US involvement in the war on terrorism, are going to stir up a whirlwind of retaliation against dissidents; while seeing themselves as paragons of moral righteousness and rescuer of the nations whose higher means justifies the end.

It's unconscionable and ill thought out. Now that China has taken a huge financial and political risk, they won't allow themselves to be humiliated or to publically loose face.

Who, among the stylishly dressed and carefully choreographed protesters will stand in for a single suffering soul in a Chinese prison? It’s easy to support a cause when it doesn’t cost you anything worse than a night in jail and a fine. Consider paying the price with your broken body and spirit to earn my respect for your self indulgent behavior.

Peace isn't an accident; it's a choice. Raven

Well written and well said, Raven, and true, too.

I have always maintained that China should not have been given the Olympics in the first place, the Olympics have become a political tool, thus departing from the original concept.

You are so right to draw attention to the brutal consequences for the Tibetans and their supporters. And for the hypocrisy of those who decry what they themselves then do.

Thank you katyzzz, it truly has me concerned. But, about all I can do is present the reality to the public and hope to quicken some to them to the repercussions of well intended but unconsidered emotion driven action.

it does seem that people who wish to protest for tibet (and yes it is a needy cause) could have come out of the wood-work long before an olympic torch was being passed down the road . . . why focus on the olympics?

all these protesting countries have trade agreements with china, people could boycott china as a tourists travel destination, political diplomats could use their position to influence foreign policy . . . to the chinese this concentration of protest on the olympics must seem an irregular spike of negativity as they dont usually get such vocal feedback on the issue . . . kind of like letting resentment build up silently and then blurting something out unexpectedly?

they will probably feel embarrassed that they gauged their own national image so wrongly

Hiya Morgan, it seems to me that the general populace is suffering from seller's remorse. I doubt that the Chinese leaders are loosing any sleep over their actions, so much as the worlds perception of those acts.

Hey Scott, I set up the video ad up through my adense account, it's and option-but after that, they selected which specific ad goes on the posts. That's as I understand things now, some of the folks that have been involved with them for a while may have information that I am not aware of.

I heard that Hillary is insisting that we boycott the Olympics. Not surprising, somehow...

Good post!

Thank you Louie, great to have you visit.

Hi SL, yea, she must be checking the opinion polls again; her trade mark. Thank you.

We have well educated women in this country with strong character and morality. Why won't they step up to the plate and run for president; is it the systematic character assassination of the vetting process that scares them away?

hmm,

China's histroy of Human Rights abuses is long and varied. 45 minutes before the olympics and the band wagon gets crowded with 'armchair protestors'. I fail to see how boycotting the olympics will create a more peaceful, loving or friendly China....

By the way, do you live in ALASKA??? Dude, get the hell out of there, haven't you seen/read '30 days of night'??? YIKES!!!

Ah, but I have seen 30 days of Nights; I've lived in all major areas of Alaska Kim. Barrow, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau, North Pole, Seward, Nenana, Fox, Gustavus, Hoonah and the list grows from there and I can assure you that the movie doesn't accurately describe Barrow or Alaska.

Your above reply leads me to suspect that you may in fact be 'one of them' or - just as likely - Santa Claus. That no one has seen you outside in the middle of the day could be evidence for either. I will wear garlic to bed on 24th December, just in case.

I'm watching you Raven.

(Apologies for the degradation of such a worthy topic with my innane humour.)

Profundity isn't my forte either Kim. Ha, I eat garlic by the handful's, in nearly everything but my breakfast cereal and coffee;and I'm reviewing its status as we speak.

Raven - I must say that I do agree. Personally I was appalled that China was given the Olympics in the first place.

The tibet cause, while being genuinely worthwhile, seems to be a trendy bandwagon that everyone has jumped on.

And as for politicians jumping on the bandwagon. Please, spare me. You want to show your outrage, how about trade sanctions against China. Oh that's right, you don't want to alienate what is the largest growing consumer society in the world at the moment!

I can't say I agree.

The fact that the olympics is being used as a tool to make China see that they are SEEN is a positive thing.

If i was living in oppression, I would want to know that others are speakingf out for me, but i do not presume to speak for the entire Tibeten people.

Hiya Brenton, explain your point of view to those in prison that will reap the rewards of emotional action.

China knows that it is seen, and are skilled at spinning perceptions to their purposes.

China is allowing free commerce and information to flow through their country and I suspect that will have a profound affect on the people and their future.

To one degree or another, we have all chosen an acceptable level of oppression from our governments or they wouldn't exist; and those governments exist because they serve a useful purpose. When that usefulness ceases, so will the government.

Dante proposed one of the worst coners ofd hell be reserved for those who stay silent in a morally corrupt situation.

Comment by tlcorbin

Then Brenton, Dante should appreciate that his proposal has been met and fulfilled by the Chinese government, with this caveat; it's the innocents in China paying the price of their leaders.

Regarding a morally corrupt situation; define corruption first with an applicable standard that universally fits the targeted demographic model, allow those affected by this model to identify problems that fit within the confines of that standard and then decide what is or isn't moral corruption. In a country of thieves, theft is honorable.

But then we come this cross roads: which code of morality do we use? Judeo-Christian? Islamic or Buddhist? Wiccan or pagan? Atheist or gnostic? Secular or spiritual? There are many to choose from, but which one is appropriate Brenton?

Advocate silence, never; advocate inaction, never; advocate considered speech and action, always.

The antics being displayed at present are aimed at satisfying the media and individual egos, not at resolving the problem, and it's shameful. That remains the primary thrust of this post.

I can agree that where action is taken out of vanity, without being well considered, that you've got a point, somewhat.

The unfortunate thing is that I am not in a position to posit any meaningful solution, Brenton. Free trade seems to be a key, but only time will tell.

Sorry I missed this one.

Too late to worry about the Olympics but not too late to get some good out of it.

The actions of the Chinese government towards Tibet should not go unnoticed and ignored.
I have little faith in capitalism being the birth of freedom because capitalism is just as compatible with fascism as it is with democracy.

I do not think that the protests here and elsewhere will make the Chinese angrier than they already are. They will however put pressure on our own governments to think twice about what business they are willing to do in China.

Hi Damo, it's never to late to comment.

I think Pandora's box had been inadvertently opened in China, but they are experts at controlling populations. We'll see what happens.
