AEL&P Sham

AEL&P, the local power company here in Juneau, has been under attack lately for poor judgment; there have been the odd report or two that an AEL&P emloyee was lightly pummeled by a disgruntled customer.

Earlier last month, there was an avalanche that raised havoc on our prime power lines and our friendly power company informed the populace that our electricity rate could grow up to 5 times the amount being paid at that time and remain that way for up to a few months. Tempers flared.

Why? Over the course of the last couple of decades, AEL&P allowed several power generator system to deteriorate and then took them off line. Those other systems, had they been maintained could have made a critical difference in this situation. But, they were dismantled and scrapped. And friends who usually had bills in the under $100 range found that their bill jumped to $350 to $400 this month. Those on fixed incomes are having a tough time of things.

Part of the galling process was AEL&P's management team, they asked for the city to underwrite a $3,000,000 interest free loan so that they could make repairs to the system and get back on line. Basically, they didn't take precautions or purchase insurance to cover contingencies like equipment being damaged in a known slide area. Now that the stuff is damaged, they expect the citizens to foot the repair bill and to allow them to make a profit on the repairs and will reward their customers with a substantial rate increase.

How sweet is that? They screw up, barrow interest free money to fix their screw up and make a profit on the work and then permanently raise the base rates . . . again. Welcome to our world.

So, whats going on in your corner of the world? Burma's poor are suffering and dieing, wars are being fought and the energy crunch is driving fuel and food prices through the roof and we can't get past this crunch to help anyone else out because we're paying for repairs that never should have occurred.

The only thing good about this post is the bald, portly guy down the bottom and he looks pretty grim, go for the cat's cradle.

The guy gets a bit 'whacko' and unrefined with his imaging when he's allowed out.

I can only agree dear one, and say I believe it all to be a sign that the world is turning.

That it is, for sure kleo. Strangely, they were able to affect repairs far sooner than they projected: a miracle, a miracle . . .
